Behaviors of a self centered nature were discussed at the onset. Our expectation was that in running Class V water, group think and constant vigilance in regard to being mindful of others is the best skill in insuring safe behaviors. Anywhere, for anything.

Chip Kelly stated that you should be able to watch a practice for 5 minutes and know what a team is all about.

A variety of drills were introduced in an attempt to develop a certain comfort level when tired and slightly disoriented in the water.

The side stroke can be utilized when swimming persons, boats, or gear to the bank as your head stays out of the water for constant breathing and one arm is free to hold on to the object being rescued.

A flipped raft means a lot of bodies are suddenly in the water thus practicing an efficient recovery is essential. Learning is more profound when you have fun doing it. If possible.

Recovery skills were practiced in all types of craft so our participants would be skilled in assisting all boaters should the need arise.

Completing the fitness test provided us with the confidence to take on Sunday’s challenges as a unit.

We were blessed with the opportunity to put all of the previous day’s instruction into practice in formidable conditions.

The crew was then charged with extracting all persons and gear up a cliff as we emulated an emergency take out.

Victor tends to the static line. He was pleased that his new prosthetic leg arrived last week so he could participate in the training.

The crew safely got all gear up the to the rendezvous and loaded in one hour. Following a spirited snowball fight, we find peace and pose for the team picture.
I am very grateful for the humility and selflessness of my teammates and new friends who had the self awareness and courage to participate in the first training ORT has offered to the public. We all have issues, yet through training, we overcome adversity by attempting to better ourselves and those around us. Sharing, connecting.
